boycott facebook

Am I boycotting FaceBook?

This weekend, there was a trend on FaceBook to start the boycott of FaceBook and of Twitter.  Although I agree with the sentiment, I’m not sure that I can fully boycott the platforms because my business is pretty tightly tied to social media. The political issues of Facebook are enough to make me sick.  I don’t like the manipulation and the way that they played with the 2020 elections.  But there is something far more insidious that these platforms are doing.  If you have access to Netflix, they actually have a pretty decent documentary that explains how far the social media platforms (and especially Facebook) have gone in order to manipulate the users.  Please take the time to watch the documentary, it’s called “The Social Dilemma“.

So, I was thinking about separating myself more from FaceBook lately and was considering how I would do that without feeling totally cutoff from my digital world.  Now this boycott is picking up steam.  Many of my online friends are talking about moving to parler.com .  I already had a Parler account and had been on there a few times – but I don’t think that they’ll be able to handle a large scale move from FaceBook and Twitter of all the people that are heading there to get away from FaceBook,  It’s a new platform and not matured well yet.  But, I’ll try to hang with it.

Meanwhile, back at Facebook, I’m going to ‘automate myself’.  My steps for this are as follows:
  1. No more direct interaction on Facebook.
  2. No more direct posts on Facebook.
  3. All my posts will be links back to MY OWN website where I will publish everything.

How am I going to do it?  Well, I think I’ll use a third party service, OnlyWire or another to go to FB and automatically create a posting for any article that I create, or picture that I publish.  This will create my own platform.  I want my own picture feed, video feed, and article feed. So, you’re welcome to tell me what you think of this.  I would like your opinion.  I also would ask –

  1. Are you boycotting FaceBook?
  2. What’s your plan now?

Please let me know in the comments section.

I am not on Parlour yet. And I dont think it is a good idea to abandon the enemy’s” table

    1. Parler needs to mature and work out its kinks. I agree about not ‘leaving the enemies camp’.

Absolutely. Facebook is a curse. Been trying to stay off it as much as possible for a while. Parler it is.

  3. Boycotting to the point where I only have the account for work purposes. Yes move to Parler but it’s just a matter of time before they start censoring and get bought. The true need is for real free speech platform that the alphabet companies can’t fuck with. When are you starting it up JR?

    1. I agree. It’s hard to leave such a powerful platform and leaving could negatively affect our online businesses.

You are brilliant and I love how your mind works. Agree that abandoning FB all together is difficult because I have family all over the country and we use this to share pictures and our lives. So many cherished memories are in all the thousands of pictures I have there – if someone knows how to get them from FB to my computer I would love to speak with you FB Sherri Hertl Johnson private message me. Anyway, but there are so many insidious things about social media that I am weary of. We are so exposed there and if AOC wants to start Black Listing well FB is the way to do that. Haven’t we all expressed our opinions on the last 4 yrs and the election? Please keep us in the loop 🙂

    1. I agree. Tough to leave. The sad part is that many people don’t know how much FB has been limiting their speech and reach. I have 3000+ FB friends and another 2000+ FB followers. When I send a message, barely any of them see it. That really limits my speech and reach. Too bad too. I have way more I’d like to share – but why bother if it falls so short.
